Positive Psychology was developed in the 20th century by Martin Seligman. Throughout his teaching years, He noted that the psychology of his time only focused on removing the negatives in the individual’s life. They thought that if they could cut out all of the negative mental attributes, the only thing left in the patient would be good. It turns out; they found that mental health is not the absence of mental illness. As a result, positive psychology was born.

In positive psychology, there are five main areas of study. The resulting acronym developed by Martin Seligman is PERMA. Which represents the following: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and purpose, and Accomplishments. Due to how new the field is, there is still some dispute over these areas. However, for the time being, the areas mentioned above seem to be secure.

In the coming years, I think this new discipline of psychology will become more and more critical. The field allows us to shed light on the other half of our nature. Man being both saint and sinner has in history only been able to focus on the sinner portion. Now with this new tool, we can develop a broader vision of what it means to be human.
